Here for sale we have an Avalon L 25 Custom electro-acoustic guitar in Gloss Natural finish. Custom ordered and hand made in the Northern Ireland Newtownards factory in 2006, this guitar is part of Avalon's early flagship Legacy Series. The series was introduced at the top end of the Avalon range in 2003, and discontinued in 2013 to be replaced by the Ard Ri and Pioneer series. Avalon Guitars was originally founded as The Lowden Guitar Co. in 1989 after purchasing the purpose-built factory, staff and assets of Lowden from receivership. When the licence agreement with George Lowden expired in 2003, Avalon was born, and grew into the worldwide guitar company we know today. Whilst distinct from Lowden, Avalon guitars- especially those made in the Newtownards factory- share Lowden's fantastic build quality and excellent reputation amongst players.
This instrument features an all-solid construction comprising a Cedar top, Rosewood back and sides, Mahogany neck and 20 fret Ebony fingerboard with matching bridge. The body is double bound whilst the top is adorned with a tortoiseshell pickguard and multi-stripe purfling. A bone saddle and nut are fitted, along with Chrome sealed tuning machines. This Custom ordered model features a hand-inlaid wooden rosette and factory custom neck profile. A Fishman undersaddle piezo pickup and PREFIX Pro on-board preamp system are installed, and feature controls for volume, notch, bass, treble, contour & brilliance, along with a phase reverse switch. Now discontinued, the L-25’s closest relative today would be the Pioneer L1-20.
The Mahogany neck plays very well, with a profile that might be described as a Soft 'V' shape, which fills the hand nicely for a confidence-inspiring grip when chord playing whilst remaining slim enough for articulate melodic lines and fingerstyle. The often overlooked 'V' profile is supremely comfortable to play on as it encourages your thumb and wrist into an ergonomic position. The nut width at 1.752" is fairly wide, and provides ample string spacing for accuracy when playing. The Ebony of the fingerboard is luxurious under the fingers, and with its 16" radius is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques. The Jumbo body size is certainly on the larger side, but with its smooth lines is comfortable in both standing and seated positions.
The acoustic voice of the Avalon L 25 Custom is deep and rich, delivering a sonically unique character thanks to the selection of Cedar and Rosewood for its construction. The large body size contributes to the strong bass response that this instrument provides, along with a wide and sensitive dynamic range. The Cedar top enhances the warmth of the tone without making the sound too soft or woolly. Certainly, there is plenty of brightness and sparkle in the top end on both strummed and picked passages. The on-board Fishman PREFIX Plus pickup and preamp system faithfully conveys the voice of the instrument whilst providing the flexibility and control required for both live and recording situations. A wonderful early example of Avalon Guitar's stellar luthiery, which now nearing 20 years old has developed its own unique vibe and sound.

Aesthetic Condition:
Headstock: Overall very good condition. The top edge demonstrates light to mild scuffing and indentation wearing through the finish in places. The front face shows a moderate scratch beside the high E tuner which pierces the finish. Further lighter scratching and indentation to the front face is visible under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes.
Neck: Overall very good condition. The rear of the neck demonstrates a small patch of finish that has worn through to expose the wood behind the 12th fret. The fingerboard demonstrates light pitting which does not affect playability. A screw hole is present at the heel plate where the strap button has previously been located. The lacquer surrounding some of the fret ends at both sides of the fingerboard has chipped away revealing the wood. Whilst this is lightly felt under the thumb it does not negatively impact the overall playability of the instrument.
Body: Overall good condition. The front face demonstrates multiple instances of notable indentation and chipping of the lower bout towards the bottom edge which reveals the wood beneath. The treble side waist shows a crack which through testing with light we have established does not travel through the wood, and therefore presents no structural concern. The crack does show discoloration, indicating that it has been present for some time. The binding and sides of the instrument demonstrate multiple instances of mild indentation. Notable playwear consistent with the use of a pick surrounds the soundhole, having become dark and discoloured in some places over the years.
Condition of Frets:
The frets show mild signs of use, not affecting playability. Light flattening of the frets is noticeable in the early register. There is considerable material remaining for any fret work the new owner may wish to perform.
Current Set Up:
Truss Rod: Fully functional. Truss rod tool (5mm hex) not included.
Hardware: Fully functional with light signs of wear. One screw is missing from the preamp mounting.
Structural: No concerns or issues to note.
Height of the string from the 12th Fret-1.25mm - Bass 2mm
Please be aware that the action on a guitar may move slightly in transit and this measurement is the current height.
Strings on Guitar - 11-52
There is considerable material remaining in the saddle for further adjustments.
Electrics:
Fully functional. When sliding the frequency slider all the way to the right (10kHz) it can cause the pickup to squeal or crackle. Once set, it does function without issue.
Case & Accessories
Hiscox hard case
The case demonstrates moderate signs of use. The lining inside the bottom of the case has split and has exposed some padding. The case protects the guitar as intended. Truss rod tool not included.
