Here for sale we have an absolutely beautiful hand-made acoustic guitar from Ron Pinkham, the founder and main luthier of Woodsound Studio, Rockport Maine. Established in 1975 after Ron discovered he could not find himself a concert instrument that was sufficiently balanced, the business began with repair and building of fine stringed instruments from Ron's living room, and moved through a few premises before settling into their permanent home in 1989. Approaching his guitar building from a classical mindset, Ron makes a wide variety of instruments with both Steel & Nylon strings, and has received endorsements from Don McLean amongst others.

This LP-1 model was made in 1993, and features an all-solid construction comprising a Spruce top, Rosewood back and sides, Mahogany neck and 21 fret Ebony fingerboard with matching bridge. The body is double bound in Flame Maple, whilst the top features a traditionally crafted wooden rosette and multi-stripe purfling. A Bone saddle and nut are fitted, along with a set of sealed Schaller tuning machines with Ebony buttons. The LP-1 was designed for the fingerpicking guitarist who requires a stronger bass, balanced mid range and singing top end, as well as fast attack and great sustain. It achieves this through the use of an unusually tapered body, which is slimmer in the upper bout, along with innovative X bracing that helps with stronger projection.

The Mahogany neck plays beautifully, with a nicely slim profile which might be described as a Shallow 'D' shape thanks to the gently flattened area to the centre rear. Ron describes all of his neck profiles as asymmetrical; slightly thicker on the bass side and tapering to a more rounded edge on the treble to assist with barre chords, and this is certainly the case with this particular example. The heel design is kept nice and compact to facilitate easier playing in the upper register, meaning that you can actually reach up onto the fingerboard extension with relative ease- not a common feature on non-cutaway acoustics. The Ebony of the fingerboard is luxurious under the fingers, and with a nicely flat radius (measured to 17") is practical for a wide range of playing styles and techniques.

The acoustic voice of the Ron Pinkham LP-1 is delicate and beautifully balanced, whilst still delivering plenty of power and a warm bass response. The body design is rather unusual for a steel string, appearing similar to a classical guitar in size and shape. This affords the instrument a unique sound amongst steel string acoustics, with the stronger bass response and volume often associated with large bodies blended beautifully with the intimacy and balance of orchestral models. Fingerpicked passages are rich and sumptuous, with an impressively even response from all of the strings. This makes the instrument feel extremely responsive to the touch; allowing you to pick out intricate melodies on top of your chords and bass lines with ease. When strumming, the warmth of the bass works fabulously with the punchy and clear mid range to produce a tone that is unmistakable whilst blending smoothly into any context.

    Aesthetic Condition:

Headstock: Overall very good condition. Light indentations which break the finish are present to the tip of the rear face, lightly exposing the wood beneath. Light indentations which in places pierce the finish are present around the edges of the headstock, most notably at the front of the tip, rear lower corner near the 6th E tuner and treble side edge near the B tuner. The front face displays light indentations and scratching which can only be seen under direct light, as is common with high gloss finishes.

Neck: Overall very good condition. The rear of the neck displays light scratching and indentations throughout the register, which can be lightly felt in the playing position. This is most notable behind the 7th fret on the treble side where the wood is lightly exposed. Very light scratching to the fingerboard is only visible under direct light.

Body: Overall very good condition. Moderate indentations which pierce the finish expose the wood on the front face are present at either side of the fingerboard extension and treble side of the pickguard, consistent with playwear. Light cracking of the lacquer can be seen at the bass side waist, rosette and behind the bridge. These appear stable and will not worsen through regular use. Light scratching and indentation to all aspects of the body can only be seen under close scrutiny. The pickguard shows milder scratching consistent with playwear. The tip of the pickguard closest to the neck has broken off and is missing.
