Made in Taiwan, the instrument consists of a Spruce top, Nato back and sides, a Nato neck, and a 20-fret Rosewood fingerboard. Other appointments include Chrome sealed tuners, and a Yamaha preamp and pickup system with controls for volume, 3-band EQ, and mid-shaping.
 
The neck plays well, with a semi gloss finish that is quick and fluid in the hand, along with a comfortable 'C' profile that gives great thumb positioning. The cutaway gives excellent access to the upper register and the Grand Auditorium body style feels full without being overwhelming, great for players who still want a big tone without having to wrestle with a dreadnought.
 
The voice of the Yamaha CPX-5 is well balanced and clear, with an unpronounced yet detailed low end, open mid range and sparkling top end. The Spruce top projects very well, with a wide and sensitive dynamic range that retains clarity even at higher volumes. The Yamaha pickup and preamp system faithfully convey the acoustic voice of the instrument, adding the versatility for live and recording situations whilst affording the player a host of useful on-board controls.
